Overview
The TRX-4 Sport is the streamlined version of Traxxas' TRX-4 line — no portals, no remote-locking differentials, no exotic bodywork. Just a solid-axle 4WD crawler with a two-speed transmission, limited-slip differentials, and the Cantilever link suspension that made the TRX-4 line famous. The included Titan 21T brushed motor and XL-5 HV ESC are basic but reliable; the Sport serves as an excellent blank canvas for builders, and its unpainted, kit-style body invites customization. Traxxas' famously deep parts catalog and legendary customer support make it the safest first crawler for beginners who don't want to deal with mystery-brand hobby grade frustrations.
The Verdict
What's good
- $200+ cheaper than the portal-axle TRX-4 variants
- Two-speed transmission is genuinely useful on trail
- Cantilever rear suspension works excellently
- Traxxas warranty support is best-in-class
- Huge aftermarket body catalog (RC4WD, Pro-Line, etc.)
Watch out for
- No portals — less ground clearance than SCX10 III or competing rigs
- Stock CG is high for aggressive crawling
- Stock tires are hard and slippery on rock
- Brushed motor cogs at low speed — a brushless upgrade is common
Who it's for
Known Issues
Stock 2065X servo is fine for stock tires but underpowered once you go aftermarket — most upgrade to a 250-300 oz-in servo within weeks. Shocks are okay but benefit from a fresh oil fill after a few months of UV exposure.
Common Mods
Reefs hard shocks, 300+ oz-in aftermarket servo (ProTek or Reefs), Pit Bull or Injora tires, brass knuckles and axle weights for forward bias, RC4WD or Pro-Line licensed body, Castle Creations sensored brushless combo.
